At 1:45 p.m. on Thursday April 12th, Local 2164 members responded to a hazardous materials incident at 5340 S. Quebec Street in Greenwood Village. 3 Employees in one of the offices experienced eye and throat irritation after being exposed to an unknown powder and they dialed 911. 13 units responded to the scene including the SMFR Haz-Mat and Decontamination apparatus. Local 2164 members evaluated the patients and entered the office wearing eye and airway protection to sample the powder. Hazardous Materials Technicians determined powder was most likely Potassium perchlorate which is commonly used for pyrotechnics. One of the 3 people exposed to the powder was transported to the hospital as a precaution; the powder was cleaned up and disposed of. This incident was an accidental exposure and not related to criminal or suspicious activity.
