At 04:29 a.m. on Monday March 26th, South Metro Battalion Chief 61, Engine 61 and Engine 62 were dispatched to a fire alarm activation at 8824 E. Florida Avenue in Arapahoe County. Upon arrival, Engine 61 reported smoke showing from the 2nd floor of the large, X-shaped, occupied apartment building and a full 1st Alarm was dispatched. That response brought an additional 2 Engines, 2 Towers, 2 Medic Units, 3 Chief Officers, 1 Rescue Company, Safety Officer, Investigators and PIO; a total of approximately 40 personnel. As the building was evacuated, a water supply hose was stretched from the closest hydrant across the street and caused the closure of Florida Avenue between Parker Road and Alton Street. Once Firefighters accessed the burning apartment, the fire was quickly extinguished. Crews searched the adjacent units and attic space for fire extension and none was found. During a primary search of the 2nd floor apartments, Engine 62 located a resident who was carried from the building and transported to the hospital by Medic 61 for evaluation. Although fire and water damage were limited, the smoke created high levels of carbon monoxide and Hydrogen cyanide. Ventilation fans were used to clear those toxins out of the air before residents were allowed back inside. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. Thank you to Aurora Fire Rescue for your assistance.
